November 2, 2022: After Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving announced an antisemitic movie and book on social media, his team, and owner Joe Tsai issued a statement denouncing his actions.

“I’m disappointed that Kyrie is appearing to support a film related to a book full of anti-semitic disinformation,” Tsai Twitter. “I want to sit down and ensure he understands it is hurting all of us, and as an individual of faith, it is not right to promote hate based on race, ethnicity, or religion.”

Irving posted a tweet linking to an Amazon page for the movie “Hebrews to Negroes, Wake Up Black America,” which is “stuffed with antisemitic tropes,” according to a report from Rolling Stone. The movie was released in 2018 and is related to a 2015 book by the same name.

The Nets condemned Irving’s actions in a statement Friday.

“The Brooklyn Nets condemn and have zero tolerance for promoting any form of hate speech,” the team said. “We believe that our initial action must be open, honest dialogue in these situations. We thank those, including the Anti-Defamation League, who have been supportive this time.”

In a tweet on Saturday, Irving added that he “meant no disrespect to all the religious beliefs.”

“The ‘Anti-Semitic’ label put on me is not justified and is not reflecting the reality or truth I live in every day,” he wrote. “I embrace and learn from all walks of life and religions.”

He still ought to remove his original tweet.

On Thursday, Irving’s post followed a series of antisemitic comments by Ye, the rapper once with the stage name Kanye West, in recent weeks. Adidas, Gap, Foot Locker, and other organizations have since cut ties with Ye, costing him his billionaire status.

The Anti-Defamation League, StopAntisemistism, and the International Legal Forum applauded Adidas’s move on Tuesday.

The Nets previously benched Irving in 2021 for refusing to get vaccinated against Covid-19. It is still determined whether his sociable media post will impact his playing ability.
