November 11, 2022: -According to an analyst, the U.S. midterm elections are leading to “disruptive changes” in U.S. tech policies if the Republicans take control of Congress.
Though Republican and Democratic candidates are pledging a strict approach to China to win voters who see China as national and job security, the Republicans are mostly to take a more hawkish stance.
“What the Republicans and Democrats are fully aligned on is a tough approach to China. One area where they are less aligned is getting multilateral partners to agree,” said Martin Chorzempa, a senior fellow at Peterson Institute for International Economics, on Wednesday, when asked about the reach the outcome of the midterm might affect U.S.-China relating.
“A lot of Republicans think it is a waste of time. They may want to go with it alone. Still, that creates is making with the U.S. allies and might lead to more dislocation, disruptive changes in the tech policies,” said Chorzempa, citing “techno-nationalism” as a hot-button issue.
Last month, the U.S. announced exporting controls to restrict China’s access to specific types of cutting-edge semiconductor chips, which crimps Chinese companies’ access to crucial tech.
Companies require a license if they use American tools to give certainly advance in commuting semiconductors or related manufacturing equipment to China.
One of the significant challenges that the tech sector experiences are the friction between the U.S. and China, which “pulls companies in different directions and potentially fractures the global Internet, a multinational company that wants to do business in the U.S. and China,” Chorzempa stated.
