House Judiciary Group has subpoenaed FTC for Twitter-connected records

April 13, 2023: On Wednesday, the Republican-led House committee said it subpoenaed the Federal Trade Commission for documents connected to the agency’s inquiry into Twitter.

The subpoena comes following the House Judiciary Committee questioning the FTC to hand over the information voluntarily in the previous month.

The request came following the Select Subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Administration released a report regarding what Committee Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, called “inappropriate and heavy demands” by the FTC of Twitter near the time that billionaire Elon Musk required the company.

Jordan wrote to FTC Chair Lina Khan Wednesday that the agency’s connections with the earlier demand “have been woefully insufficient.”

Jordan said the FTC’s earlier answers sought to connect its inquiry into Twitter to a privacy-related order. It’s an equation with enforcing. But Jordan noted they ignored other aspects of the committee’s questions about the FTC’s probe.

An FTC spokesperson stated that the agency had offered to brief congressional members on its inquiry but that they still needed to take the FTC up on that offer.

“The FTC respects the important part of Congressional oversight,” FTC spokesperson Douglas Farrar said.

“We have made many offers to brief Chairman Jordan’s staff on our search into Twitter. Those are standing offers made before this entirely unnecessary subpoena,” he added.
