January 6, 2021: The winner of the Georgia U.S. Senate election runoff is projected to be Reverend Raphael Warnock, flipping a Republican seat. Bringing Democrats closer to unified control of Congress and the White House, according to NBC news.
Ebenezer Baptist Church’s senior pastor will defeat incumbent GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler, a former business executive appointed to fill the seat temporarily.
Warnock is the first Black senator elected from Georgia, and he will be one of three Black senators in Congress.
“I promise you this tonight, I am going to the Senate to work for all of Georgia, no matter who you cast your vote for in this election,” Warnock said in a speech early Wednesday morning.
With Warnock’s projected win, the Democratic caucus holds 49 members in the upper chamber, while Senate Republicans have 50 seats.
The Senate will be evenly split if Ossoff wins the runoff race, giving Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote.
The special election between Loeffler and Warnock is the second most expensive Senate race ever. Their race has drawn nearly $363 million till Monday.
Loeffler had refused to acknowledge Biden’s victory. She announced in a statement on Monday evening that she would oppose the certification of the Electoral College results on Wednesday.
Warnock mentioned in a statement on Sunday. Senator Loeffler has a responsibility to speak out against the unsubstantiated claims of fraud and defend Georgia’s election.
The seat will be up for re-election in 2022 for a six-year Senate term.
