January 7, 2021: The country’s largest flight attendant unions expressed safety and security concerns, which are at risk due to politically emerged disruptions on flights after the pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol building.
After two onboard disruptions on Washington DC bound flights, the unions commented, which included a Delta Airlines carrying a Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah. During this, some passengers chanted “traitor.” Delta responded that it was aware of the ongoing incident, and the crew quickly engaged and resolved the issue.
Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, said, “The mob mentality behavior on several flights to the D.C. area was threatening the safety and security of every single person on board, it was unexpected and unacceptable.”
Nelson said it’s hard to keep calm as the Capitol’s riots create further concern about the departure from the D.C. area.
Julie Hedrick, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents American Airlines’ more than 25,000 flight attendants, said in a statement that the union is “incredibly concerned about recent politically motivated incidents on board passenger aircraft.
“Regardless of one’s political beliefs, the cabin of a commercial aircraft must, out of necessity, be a calm environment for the safety of everyone on board,” Julie said.
Another incident that left everyone shook was a video posted by a fellow passenger on Twitter user @MaranieRae, who was on the flight. It was an American Airlines flight to Dulles International Airport this week wherein passengers shouted and cursed at each other unless the crew managed the situation.
Flight attendant unions called for zero tolerance for such incidents. Interfering with a flight crew member’s duties is against the law, and unruly passengers can be fined $25,000.
Airlines are now taking the necessary precautions to protect employees and move flight crew to airport hotels to avoid central Washington D.C
locations.
