January 7, 2021: The U.S. Capitol was finally secured, hours after President Donald Trump’s supporters invaded Congress’s halls to disrupt the confirmation of Joe Biden as the next president.
Protesters freely roamed in the Capitol complex, including the Senate chamber. One man even stood on the Senate’s chair and shouted, “Trump won the election.”
A video circulating on social media showed a woman falling from a doorway window in the Capitol, apparently after being shot. Several law enforcement officials said a woman bombarded by police inside the Capitol building during the protest had died.
Three other people died from medical reasons that arose during the riot.
Vice President Mike Pence was staying in the count of Electoral College votes, was taken out of the Senate as the Capitol complex went into lockdown when Trump supporters began entering the building.
Members of Congress were ordered to take shelter in the complex, wherein one improvised explosive device was found.
Another pipe-bomb-like device was found at the headquarters of the Republican National Committee.
After h
ours of riots, authorities began to toss flash-bang grenades and tear gas into a crowd in front of the Capitol building.
Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah pushed back on Trump for the riot.
Trump had encouraged thousands of supporters to march to the Capitol to protest what historically have been ceremonial proceedings
during a rally outside the White house.
In a national television address, Biden said, “At this hour, our democracy is under unprecedented assault.”
“Therefore, I call on President Trump to go on national television now to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution, and demand an end to this siege,” Biden said
In a tweet, Pence said, “The violence and destruction taking place at the U.S. Capitol Must Stop, and it Must Stop Now. Anyone involved must respect Law Enforcement officers and immediately leave the building.”
“Go home. We love, you’re exceptional,” Trump said.
“These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace,” Trump tweeted.
