January 21, 2021: Leaders over the world reacted to the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday.

The reactions included offerings of congratulations, pitting their countries and economies regarding Biden’s foreign policy plan, and a swipe at Donald Trump’s administration.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted his congratulations to the new President and the Vice President. “America’s leadership is vital on the issues that matter to us all, from climate change to COVID, and I look forward to working with President Biden,” Johnson wrote.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “I look forward to working with the United States Congress to make our countries safe, prosperous, and more resilient.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Biden and Harris, saying he is looking forward to interacting with Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother.

“China looks forward to working with the new administration to promote sound & steady development of China-U.S. relations and jointly address global challenges in public health, climate change & growth,” wrote Cui, the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated the U.S. administration has said the island “stands ready to work with you as a global force for good.”

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated and welcomed the United States back to the Paris Agreement.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, Germany, tweeted describing Biden’s and Harris’ inauguration as “a true celebration of American democracy.”

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video he tweeted, He and Biden shared a warm personal friendship going back many decades. He also added He is looking forward to strengthening the U.S. and Israel ties.

Iraqi President Barham Salih also congratulated and said the tensions with the U.S. might be eased while working with them and promoting peace in the Middle East.

Religious leaders also got involved. The Dalai Lama tweeted, saying he’s pleased Biden is giving high priority to the urgent issue of climate change.
