September 26, 2023: On Monday, Ex-President Donald Trump expressed his interest in purchasing a Glock handgun in South Carolina, as seen in a video posted on social media by his spokesman, Steven Cheung. Trump can be heard saying, “I want to buy one,” while admiring the firearm.
It’s worth noting that Trump has faced legal challenges in four separate criminal cases this year. Federal law typically prohibits individuals under indictment from buying firearms.
However, a federal judge in Texas ruled that this statute was unconstitutional in September 2022, citing a Supreme Court decision that struck down a New York gun restriction earlier that year. This ruling has cast uncertainty on a range of gun control laws.
Trump faces 91 felony counts across these four cases and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The video was filmed during an unscheduled campaign stop at Palmetto State Armory, a gun store in Summerville, South Carolina.
While Trump’s interest in purchasing a handgun is highlighted in the video, it’s important to consider the broader context of gun-related incidents and their impact in the United States, where thousands of people die in such incidents each year.
Gun injuries remain a leading cause of death for children and adolescents, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with 2021 marking the highest recorded gun death toll in the country.
