November 10, 2020: Walmart experimenting to check if self-drive cars or robotic delivery is a better option for their retail functioning. Partnering with General Motors, Walmart is testing a pilot project to deliver groceries and other goods in the suburban region.
Amazon has already invested in self-drive cars and recently took over a company to change its approach towards the delivery channel and the supply chain. Retail giants like Walmart will be investing in logistics and supply chains as the future is about technological advancement in each industry.
According to the recent conversation with Walmart’s Vice President of customer product, the pilot project will start in early 2021 and, will be tested in Arizona. Reducing carbon emission is one of the catches in every giant company are investing. Walmart mentioned the fuel, and the battery-driven vehicle used will be sourced from renewable energy resources.
“Customers can place an order from their local store and have it delivered, contact-free, via one of Cruise’s all-electric self-driving cars,” Ward said. “Technology that has the potential to not only save customers time and money but also be helpful to the planet is the technology we want to learn more about.”
Walmart started working on the contactless delivery program in 2018 and was supposed to be functioning by now. However, the pandemic has put things to hold as the current focus on Robo-taxi is under the limelight. Various companies have invested in automated robot-driven vehicles. The investors and the series funds are majorly invested in automated vehicles.
The pilot project will be the key to the next move in the automated driving changes in Walmart.
