June 10, 2020: San Diego is doing the opposite of the current call on defunding the police in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. The second-largest city of California had a meeting and voted 8-1 to increase the funding for the police department. The council was for more than 10 hours which included a few of the residents as well.
Mayor Kevin did mention that it is a systematic issue and we have to overcome it. Defunding the Police department is never a solution. We need well-trained officers so we would continue hiring expert trainers and train our officers to handle the situation in a better way and understand our diverse community. The budget for police officers has been increased from $27million to $566 million for the next financial year.
San Diego created a new city office for Race and Equity increased the rent relief fund from $1.5million to 15.1 million. Monday meeting included more than 400 phone calls where some requested to defund the police others made a statement police officers have done much good than evil things.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he will allocate the funds from the police department to youth-driven initiatives and social service
Los Angeles, Mayor Eric said he would allocate $250 million from his city budgets to youth initiatives, jobs, and health initiatives
Minneapolis last week has disbanded the police department and build a better public safety department.
“It’s not just about taking away money from the police, it’s about reinvesting those dollars into black communities,” Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, told WBUR
