June 8, 2020: The left-leaning council in Minneapolis announced to demobilize the MPD after the death of George Floyd. May 26th when a police officer pressed his leg on George Floyd’s neck to death.
Many protestors have tried to defend the police department in various regions across the country. Many debates and the analyst state’s it is unrealistic where it would be a difficult situation in the region without a police officer. We cannot predict how the police free future would look like but people requested to have a social worker rather than a police officer.
The protestors kept repeating to demobilize the police and the statement from the Minneapolis city council is still in consideration and we do not have a clear idea on how is going to be implemented. NYPD president told the reporter on Friday if we defund and remove the police department then it would be the welcome to disaster. Also, there was a report from a police officer referring to the increase in 48% in murder cases, a 22 % increase in the assaults, and domestic abuse up by double digits.
With the unemployment hitting 40 million the crime rate is increasing accordingly and sending a social worker is never an answer as said by the experts. Defunding police would be a problem and rather they can better train the police and train how to handle the situation and stop the old techniques used. The city council also stated they will be investing in the safety initiatives than the police department.
The council members were Cam Gordon, Steve Fletcher, Phillipe Cunningham, Jeremiah Ellison, Andrea Jenkins, Alondra Cano, Lisa Bender, and Jeremy Schroeder. “Our commitment is to end our city’s toxic relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department,” Bender said
There is still a lot of discussion from the experts and we are still unclear how it is going to happen.
